Ghosting

by Matt Cook

/

about

Joining forces with his oldest bandmate and best friend, Jeff Ulrich of “Matt and Friends” the two combine soulful two-part harmonies and it’s pure magic. Cook’s signature falsetto takes front-and-center in his latest creation about a phenomenon that hits home on many levels. In this modern age many have fallen victim to “ghosting.” You can be talking to someone one day, and the next discover that you have been fazed out. Whether it be via social media, not answering phone calls, etc. it has unfortunately become an all too common occurrence in today’s world. It leaves you feeling fooled and confused: “Like a ghost you haunt and fade out of my life/I don’t want to be left in lust.” It starts off simple enough. You catch “a glimpse of the temptress” who is “mixing tequila sunrise.” The attraction grows. Cook perfectly juxtaposes this attraction as you hear Ulrich’s fainter background vocals. If you listen close enough, you will hear it repeating, “I want you.” The attraction grows into flirting “that you did not mean” leaving the unsuspecting victim hating himself for loving her. At a loss for why it happens, you tend to blame yourself: “You frustrate me/I thought I knew you better than that,” all the while knowing that honesty should always be the best policy. As the last note fades away, you’re left with a sense of emptiness. You’ve been ghosted.

-Nicole Cook

lyrics

Too young to know just what you want
Trying hard to be something you're not
Oh you're just a slave to the night
Ripped shirt and make me take a glimpse
Of a temptress clouding intelligence
Mixing tequila sunrise

I'm reeling from all the jive and flirting that you did not mean
As you wandered aimlessly around the bar
Returning to me with open arms
I must be missing you

I tried with you, now I hate myself for loving you
If you were me you would have let me down honestly
You frustrate me, I thought I knew you better than that
Like a ghost you haunt and fade out of my life
I don't want to be left in lust

Cautiously pressed tightly up against your body
Building false confidence
Oh you want to get me alone
Same act and just a different scene
You exit, stumble pretentiously
Slurred words and glazed over eyes

I'm reeling from all the jive and flirting that you did not
Fooled me with formalities and endless drinks
I saw you sneaking sips for yourself
As I kept to myself

I tried with you, now I hate myself for loving you
If you were me you would have let me down honestly
You frustrate me, I thought I knew you better than that
Like a ghost you haunt and fade out of my life
I don't want to be left

I tried with you, now I hate myself for loving you
If you were me you would have let me down honestly
It pains my soul, I thought I knew you better than that
Like a ghost you haunt and fade out of my life
I don't want to be left in lust
