Caffeine

Caffeine 05:39
You’re too blind you can’t see it I’m on fire and burning in front of your eyes Only now say you need it Make mistakes, make your choice and hide under the guise Of a comfortable failure Had you only stayed with me Now I’m lying to myself Don’t you get me started in the morning Don’t you turn me on It’s now, it’s never gonna be later Don’t you get me at all? Moving out, looking pretty Your mind races as fast as the people you pass One amongst Center City Make amends, condescend, party with your new friends Every bar on Chestnut Street You’re as lit as them all but you’re just as lonely Keep me up like you’re caffeine Now I’m lying with myself Don’t you get me started in the morning Don’t you turn me on It’s now it’s never gonna be later Don’t you get me at all? I’ll let you go, I’ll just let you go I’ll let you go, yes I will, yes I will, you know I will Don’t you say no, don’t you say no Don’t you say no, yes you will, yes you will Oh you always will Don’t you get me started in the morning Don’t you turn me on Laughed at by your sorority haters Don’t you get me at all? Don’t you get me started in the morning Don’t you turn me on This ending lasts forever Don’t you get me at all?

You build me up just to let me down When you use your words You pull me in just to let me drown And oh the hurt When you you use your words And oh my God What we've done When we used our words We should have run You make me beg and you let me plead When you use your words You stab my heart and you let it bleed And oh the hurt When you use your words And oh my God What we've done When we used our words We should have run And oh my God Let us burn When we use our words We never learn

about

Just a Taste...
As you hear the first few piano notes of “Caffeine,” there’s no denying Matt Cook’s signature style, but this time his sound is a little more refined, a little smoother and a bit edgier than his earlier work. You could say Cook has evolved from his lone keyboard into a musician who carefully adds the right instrument to compliment each note, in turn, creating a production if you will, just like his favorite musicians Brian Wilson and Ben Folds. Caffeine is a take on a relationship where you watch someone make the wrong choice: picking “loveless love” over what could have been something meaningful. The first 17 seconds are slow in pace, and combine a simple melody with just the right touch of bass and drums. Just like those first few sips of java, the audience savors them. The opening lyrics, “You’re too blind, you can’t see it/I’m on fire and burning in front of your eyes,” illustrates the pain this choice has caused. As the chorus hits, the beat becomes faster and staccato-like as you witness the rush of emotions that comes with an unrequited love. Cook sings, “Don’t you get me started in the morning/Don’t you turn me on.” Just like a cup of joe, there is an undeniable craving. Cook’s choice of backup vocals combined with his falsetto on the chorus welcome back his classic sound and usher it into a new age. As the singer watches his love interest party with her “new friends,” and hit up the bars, he sees beyond her façade: “You’re as lit as them all, but you’re just as lonely.” By the last verse, the mood changes as the bass kicks in and the moving on process begins as Cook sings, “I’ll let you go…”
